Shipping containers of tiny shelter components unloaded as City’s next contractor takes on installing electrical, HVAC and other requirements to make them shelters.
Hamilton Barton / Tiffany “Temporary” Homeless Tiny Homes
In August 2024, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath issued a Mayoral Directive directing City of Hamilton staff to expand emergency shelters. The directive lead to the creation of a low-barrier “temporary” outdoor tiny homes community to be run by the City of Hamilton.
The shelter will house couples with addictions and individuals with pets who are either restricted from indoor shelters or refuse to enter into them.
The project has been engulfed with controversy, including the non-competitive awards of a $1.4-million contract to order 40 microshelters. The contract was given to a company with no experience that had a website with misleading content.
