The City of Hamilton’s has failed to meet its promised timeline for repaving Dundurn Street South between King Street West and Main Street West.

The City’s July 30 rush bid for the 300-metre stretch stated the work was of the highest urgency, and needed to be complete no later than October 2. The July The tender documents called for the contract to be awarded by August 21 and for construction to begin August 31.

Instead of the work being completed by October 2, City Hall delays resulted in the contract being awarded after the deadline. According to the City’s bid website, the contract was awarded on October 6 to GIP Paving Inc. at a cost of $474,400.

The original repaving and sidewalk reconstruction was intended to be part of the City’s pre-election roads blitz, with the October 2 completion date being three weeks before the October 26 municipal election.

The City has not disclosed why the contract was awarded many weeks later than originally planned, and has provided public notice of an updated construction timeline.

The nearly half-million dollars in work will only last a few years at most. However, the need for the short-term fix is evident to anyone driving or walking along this stretch of crumbling roadway and broken sidewalks.

This portion of Dundurn Street South will be reconstructed when the B-Line light rail transit line is built, because LRT trains will use it to switch from King Street to Main Street. The trains will then operate on Main Street West between Dundurn Street and McMaster University.
