An eye-level outdoor photograph captures a grey multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle hovering in mid-flight before a commercial retail building. In the foreground, an empty asphalt parking area is cordoned off with bright yellow caution tape strung horizontally across upright grey bollards. The drone hovers in the centre of the frame, its rotors blurred in motion, positioned directly in front of a single-storey storefront featuring textured concrete block walls and large display windows. Above the windows, a bright red fascia board bears white lettering reading "SHOPPERS EXPRESS" on the right and an integrated red Canada Post outlet sign on the left. Ontario’s Solicitor General has approved the Hamilton Police Services to launch a new ‘drone first response pilot program.’

In a news release issued earlier today (November 4, 2026), the Province committed $286,448 in funding for the project.

According to the provincial statement, the “project introduces a drone-assisted response program to provide real-time aerial intelligence for high-risk incidents and improve situational awareness” and will assist with “increasing call volumes and resource constraints, aiming to improve response times, prevent escalation and optimize resource use.”

The Hamilton Police Service has not provided any further information regarding the plan.
