Agenda and Livestream

Central Library Entry/Access Policy Next Week

This meeting preview begins with a note about what’s not on the agenda: the Central Library access policy. A special meeting of the Library Board will occur next Thursday, June 18, 2026, beginning at 6:00 p.m. to discuss the outcomes of the two-month access pilot. Between mid-March and mid-May, individuals entering the downtown Central Library branch were required to show a valid library card to enter the main portion of the branch.

The Library Board’s cutoff to register to delegate regarding the access policy is tomorrow (June 11). More information on how to delegate is available on the Hamilton Public Library (HPL) website here.

June 10 Meeting Items of Note

This month’s agenda includes the following items of note:

  • Community Connectors in the HPL;
  • Changes to material loan periods;
  • Central branch children’s area renovation;
  • HPL’s new website.

Community Connectors

The first presentation listed in the agenda is on the topic of Community Connectors. This social services program was implemented by the HPL to assist individuals using library locations as social refuges, and to connect them to social service agencies to support their needs.

HPL Shortening Loan Periods to Bring Them in Line with Comparable Libraries

A report submitted to the Board by Chief Librarian Paul Takala states the HPL’s loan periods are longer than other public libraries “by 1–2 weeks” on average.

Takala writes this means materials reach fewer people compared to other libraries.

Beginning in “early Fall,” the new borrowing time limits will change for:

  • Express DVDs: 3 days (current: 7 days)
  • All holdable recreational DVDs and Blu-rays: 7 days (current: 21 days)
  • Bestseller Express print titles: 14 days (current: 21 days)
  • DVD TV Series: 14 days (current: 21 days)

In 2026, the HPL will shorten the loan period for Recreational passes (e.g., Hamilton Conservation Authority, Ontario Parks, ROM) to the “Express borrowing model.”

The “changes will better align loan periods with community demand for high-interest materials and improve access to popular items,” Takala’s report states.

Central Library Children’s Area Renovation

The Central Library’s children’s area has been moved to the second floor. This is a response to “adult disruptions” that were ongoing on the first (main) level of the library. The “soft launch” was held on May 26. An official reopening will occur later in the summer.

New HPL.ca Website Forthcoming

This month’s agenda includes numerous references to the pending launch of a redesigned HPL.ca website.
