  • Hamilton Fire Chief Statement regarding 129 Rosslyn Avenue North Structure Fire

    10:58 a.m.

The following statement was issued by Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe at 10:14 a.m. today (August 21, 2026):

At approximately 1:41 a.m. this morning the Hamilton Fire Department received a report of a structure fire at 129 Rosslyn Avenue North, at the corner of Roxborough Avenue. An apparatus responding to a separate call in the area reported they could see smoke and fire in the area.

The first arriving crew reported heavy smoke and flames showing from a one and a half storey home, with exposures and concern for fire spread to the neighbouring one and a half storey home.

The alarm quickly upgraded to a multiple-alarm bringing additional resources from across the city to the scene. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive fire attack and search and rescue operations.

The fire in 129 Rosslyn Avenue North was quickly knocked down and the quick actions of the firefighters helped to prevent significant fire spread to 131 Rosslyn Avenue North.

All occupants of 129 Rosslyn Avenue North had exited the home prior to the arrival of firefighters. Smoke alarms could be heard sounding from 129 Rosslyn.

One adult female occupant of 129 Rosslyn Avenue North was assessed by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation and transported to hospital as a precaution. No other injures have been reported.

Damage to 129 Rosslyn is extensive. 131 Rosslyn has also sustained damage to it’s exterior and some interior smoke damage. Total damage to both homes is estimated to be between $1,000,000.00 – $1,500,000.00.

The Red Cross is assisting the five occupants of 129 Rosslyn with arrangements for temporary accommodation. The occupants of 131 Rosslyn have found their own accommodation.

The fire is suspected to have originated in the kitchen area of the home. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified due to the significant dollar loss. Firefighters remain on scene performing fire watch.
