The following statement was issued at 3:26 p.m. by the City of Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON – The Medical Officer of Health for the City of Hamilton has initiated a Heat Warning beginning on September 1, 2026.  Heat Warnings stay in effect until they are cancelled or escalated to an Extended Heat Warning.

The City of Hamilton and participating community agencies are responding to the heat by offering “cool places” to go during all stages of a heat event. These locations can be identified by a “Cool Down Here” sign at the entrance.

As part of the heat response plan regularly scheduled Open Swims at all City of Hamilton indoor and outdoor pools will be free of charge. There are many spray pads, additional cool places and outdoor pools across Hamilton. For more information visit www.hamilton.ca/heat

Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale and clammy skin, weak pulse, fainting and vomiting. If experiencing symptoms, seek help right away – call 9-1-1 if needed.

Environment Canada has issued a heating warning for Hamilton that is “expected” to remain in effect “through Wednesday.”

Hamilton’s forecast highs are expected to reach 30°C at the airport each day. Overnight lows are expected to remain above 20°C.

At 3:00 p.m., Environment Canada reported a temperature of 29.3°C at Hamilton airport.

Hamilton’s Director of Recreation states, in a written memo, that Eastwood Arena will reopen on Monday, September 21, following a five month closure to address critical repair issues.

Steve Savor writes: “To extend the facility’s short-term service life while supporting ongoing floor sport operations and minimizing service and programming disruptions, the following work was completed during the facility closure:

Roof and roof drain repair, Boiler replacement, Building envelope sealing, Shower and floor-drain repair, Block wall repair, Incoming water-line repair, Sump pump replacement, Lighting repair, and Painting of washrooms and dressing rooms.”

Next term’s City Council will be required to decide on the future of the 67-year-old facility which was originally designed as an open area arena.
