2026
Jun 24: The original version of an article on the Eastgate Square redevelopment site plan application contained incorrect information provided by the City of Hamilton. Hammer GP states the plan submitted is for three (3) 20-storey towers.
Jun 9: The original version of an article on DPAI taking over West Harbour Library design did not make clear that HPL states this work is for the long-term design and viability study — the temporary short-term opening design work was a separate contract.
Jun 9: The original version of an article on OLT member Ken Hewitt did not include the follow-up information that the sanctions vote against him was later overturned.
Apr 13: The original version of an article misspelled Paula Boutis’ name as Bontis.
2025
Dec 13: The original version of an article on the Hamilton Farmers’ Market budget stated the Board was using reserve funds to decrease the levy increase to 4.25 per cent. In fact, the Board voted against using reserve funds and is requesting the Mayor approve a full levy increase.
Nov 20: The original version of an article on Council members attending an invite-only Earth, Wind & Fire concert has been updated. Councillor Matt Francis responded by email before publication of the first version, and his email response has been added to the Council meeting statements.
Oct 9: The original version of an article on 1570 Main Street West failed to note that Kindred Works is an independent company, not an arm of the United Church.
Sep 23: The original version of an article on the Ward 8 by-election incorrectly stated Rob Cooper was Sonia Brown’s 2022 campaign manager. He was her campaign chair.
Sep 15: The original version of Joey’s Hamilton Civic Affairs Daybook for Monday, September 15, misstated the timing of the Police Service Board meeting, which was the following day (Tuesday).
Sep 8: The original version of an article misspelled St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe’s name as Mat Simcoe.
Aug 11: The original version of an article on the Ward 8 by-election candidates listed 27 candidates. One candidate withdrew, and the count was corrected to 26.
Jul 28: The original version of an article on a Dundas shooting stated the location as in front of St. Joseph’s Villa. It is more accurate to state across the road from St. Joseph’s Villa.
Jun 23: The original version of an article on new Ward 8 by-election candidates incorrectly stated a Ward 3 address used for one candidate’s registration was his residence. He owns the property but does not reside there.
Jun 10: The original version of an article on Westdale tobacco license revocations incorrectly stated convenience stores can only sell vape products up to 20 mg/mL while vape stores can sell up to 50 mg/mL. The City of Hamilton states 50 mg/mL products are illegal in Canada.
May 17: The original headline of an article on the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority misspelled CBSA as CSBA.
May 7: The original version of an article previewing the May 8 Committee of Adjustment agenda missed SDU applications at 1232 Westover Road and 41 Freedom Crescent.
Apr 30: The original version of the TPR Daybook for Wednesday, May 1, incorrectly stated the Ward 2 Town Hall began at 7:30 p.m. It begins at 7:00 p.m.
Apr 24: The original headline of an article previewing the Hamilton Public Health Sub-Committee incorrectly stated the meeting date as April 29.
Apr 21: The original version of an article on CityHousing Hamilton stated 467 vacant units were in need of repair. The correct number is 476.
Mar 19: The original headline of an article (confirm link) on an OLT hearing for an Ancaster industrial subdivision stated 340 Garner Road; the correct address is 370 Garner Road.
Feb 28: The original version of an article on the Hamilton Centre and Mountain election results incorrectly stated the Ward 14 vote margin as 89 votes.
Feb 5: The original version of an article on a 14-storey proposal at 306 King Street West stated King Street East in the first paragraph.
Jan 26: An article on the Marina Towers fire was updated to correct a timeline detail. The initial version stated a photo was taken at 10:50 a.m., it was taken at 11:12 a.m.
Jan 4: The original version of an article about non-union benefit increases stated the relevant meeting was on Monday. It was on Friday.
2024
Dec 30: The original version of an article on the OLT overruling Hamilton’s downtown height limit misspelled an OLT Member’s last name.
Dec 9: The original version of an article on the Design Review Panel’s review of Main and Longwood stated a 2018 application was for two 25-storey buildings. It was two 18-storey buildings.
Nov 11: The original version of an article on the Gore Building collapse stated the municipal street addresses as 20 and 24 King Street East. The correct addresses are 24 and 28 King Street East.
Oct 2: The original version of an article on the OLT hearing for 1065 Paramount Drive mistakenly reversed north and south of Mud Street.
Sep 27: The original version of an article on Jamesville settlement talks stated CN’s shunting yard is east of the Jamesville site. It is west of the site.
Sep 17: The original version of an article previewing the September 17 Planning Committee meeting stated a public meeting on a Waterdown development occurred in the library portion of the municipal building. It occurred in the Seniors Centre.
Sep 9: The original version of an article in Canadian Tire’s proposed towers at Main and Victoria linked to City documents that mistakenly labelled the location Main Street West; it is Main Street East. The error originated with the City; however, this publication is responsible for republishing the error.
Aug 21: The original version of an article on councillors attending a meeting remotely stated all three absent councillors were at the AMO conference. Only two of the three were.
Jul 25: The original version of an article on federal affordable housing funding used future tense for the 17 Steven Avenue project. The project is complete.
May 18: The original version of an article on an Ontario Ombudsman investigation stated the meeting under investigation was held October 23, 2023. It was October 24. The article was rewritten to report on the correct meeting.
Jan 17: The original version of an article on the City Clerk’s privacy breach contained a sub-heading typo.
2023
Nov 20: The original headline on the HSR tentative deal stated a “One-Time Increase to Wages.” The increase was to benefits, not wages.
Oct 24: The original version of an article on HSR labour negotiations stated Hamilton last hosted the Grey Cup in 1996. Hamilton hosted in 2021.
Jul 7: The original version of an article on a potential Postmedia merger stated the Hamilton Spectator’s parent company was sold in 2022. It was sold in 2020.
May 3: The original version of an article on a Compliance Audit Committee hearing stated it would occur on a Friday. The hearing was on Thursday.
Jan 12: The original version of a brief on the Hamilton Centre by-election incorrectly cited a January 26, 2022 Progressive Conservative nomination meeting as a 2023 meeting.
2022
Oct 13: The original version of an article on a 2019 Keanin Loomis incident stated he moderated the event in question. He did not. A further correction clarified the event contract gave Michelle Obama’s organization control over who conducted her on-stage interview.
Jul 25: The original version of an article on LiUNA’s OLT appeals misspelt a name as Matt Johnson. The correct spelling is Matt Johnston.
Jul 18: The original version of an article on Red Hill Inquiry testimony stated witness Gord McGuire had testified. He had not yet testified at the time of publication.
Jun 22: The original version of an article on Councillor Whitehead’s discipline contained a typo.
Jun 5: The original version of an article on the sale of Stelco lands contained a substantial calculation error, stating the per-acre sale value was $1.5-million. The correct figure is approximately $643,000 per acre.
2021
Dec: The original version of Joey’s Notepad on Hamilton’s 2030 Commonwealth Games bid did not note the Commonwealth Youth Games have existed since the 2000 Edinburgh games.
May: The original version of a column on the LRT Council vote incorrectly stated Councillor Pearson was supportive of LRT during that term. She had moved to opposition.
2020
Oct 21: A correction note removed an incorrect sentence in an article on a commercial mixed-use zoning appeal, which had stated OLT hearing dates in Spring 2020 were cancelled due to COVID-19. The same correction was applied to an article on pickup truck parking requirements, which had repeated the error.
Sep 14: The original version of an article on the Farmers’ Market Board contained typos.
Jul 31: The original version of an article on a homeless encampment injunction stated the Hamilton Community Legal Clinic was the applicant in the case. It was counsel.
Jul 24: The original version of an article on the removal of a “Defund the Police” street painting incorrectly stated posters removed by the City were part of the same protest. The posters predated the protest.
Jun 9: The original version of an article on the independent investigation into the 2019 Pride attack contained four minor typos.
May 20: The original version of an article on a proposed Pier 8 tower did not note that Landmark Place would remain the tallest building in the lower city by geodetic height.
2019
Jan 9: The original version of an article stated the City of Hamilton requested applicants for public agencies, boards, and committees provide their age. In fact, the City had not. The City only requested confirmation candidates are age 18 or older.
Mar 3: Joey Coleman wrongly read a statement by the Ontario Ombudsman in a report as stating that a member of Council was excluded from an email meeting, when in fact that member had not been excluded.
Mar 4: During a series of tweets, Joey Coleman incorrectly wrong the name of a Farmer’s Market Board member as Ron Janson instead of the correct Ron Jepson. The error was brought to attention by a reader.
Mar 20: Joey Coleman misheard the seconder on the motion to hire the new City Manager. He tweeted that the seconder was Ward 1 Councillor Maureen Wilson, in fact, the seconder was Ward 10 Councillor Maria Pearson. The tweet was deleted and corrected.
Mar 28: Joey Coleman misheard in a press scrum, initially incorrectly reporting that the RFP for Hamilton’s LRT project was extended for one month. It is extended for six months. A incorrect tweet was deleted and corrected. The story was updated with the correct information, and the corrected noted.
Apr 14: Joey Coleman incorrectly identified a person as representing Uber when they were representing Lime. The article has been corrected.
Apr 16: Joey Coleman incorrectly wrote there are 22 ambulance services in Ontario, there are 52. The error was brought to attention by a reader.
2018
February
Feb 16: The original version of an article stated the development as being in the Corktown neighbourhood. It is in fact in the Stinson neighbourhood geographically.
2017
July
July 12: We incorrectly reported that a new YWCA affordable housing proposal at their Ottawa Street location was transitional housing. We’ve corrected the story and apologize for the error. Except for the headline calling it transitional housing, the story was correct. The error was on our website for three hours, and was posted to our social media channels.
July 25: We incorrectly reported that Westinghouse moved its corporate headquarters out of 286 Sanford Street North (the Canadian Westinghouse Company building) in 1987, the corporate headquarters left in 1983 with some non-headquarters staff continuing to work in the building until 1987. We posted a correction to the story.
