Hamilton’s Waste Management Sub-Committee, a joint Council-Citizen committee, is meeting on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, to discuss the short-term actions included in the new 25-year solid waste management plan that City Council will formally adopt on Wednesday.

The agenda also includes audit results revealing challenges within the City’s Special Consideration Policy, a program that permits eligible homes to place three garbage bags per week instead of the standard one-bag limit. According to a Public Works presentation, only 35.4 per cent of participating properties have green bins out for collection.

A garbage audit review of 28 family homes within the program found that 44 per cent of their waste put out for garbage collection was actually compostable material and should’ve been placed in the Green Bin stream. In response, the City is now mandating Green Bin usage as a condition of continued program eligibility.

The City is also examining its bulk waste pick-up program, which councillors voted last week to continue at no charge to residents. A staff presentation states that 20 per cent of the time, collection teams find no waste waiting at the curb because residents do not place bulk waste out for their booked collection times. This ongoing issue costs the City approximately $200,000 per year. Since the program is free to residents, the City absorbs the full expense. No staff recommendation is included in the agenda.

The meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. and will be livestreamed on YouTube. The full agenda is online.
