One man is deceased following an incident that Hamilton Police are investigating as a shooting inside the CityHousing Hamilton apartment building at 191 Main Street West in Hamilton’s downtown.
“At approximately 6:28 p.m. this evening, Hamilton Police received a report of a shooting,” Constable Trevor McKenna stated outside the building as detectives and officers searched the area for evidence, and forensic special constables worked to document the scene.
“Upon arrival, one male was located with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital where that individual has been pronounced [deceased],” he said.
Cst. McKenna stated it is too early in the investigation to release the victim’s identity or whether he was a resident of the building.

McKenna stressed that while the investigation is in its early stages, there is reason to believe others may have been hurt.
“We believe that other people may have been injured. We don’t have solid evidence on that yet, we’re still gathering everything,” McKenna stated. “But in the event that somebody was injured, we want to make sure they’re okay, locate them and take them to safety.”
Police closed off large sections of the Durand neighbourhood for the investigation, including both Queen Street South and Hess Street South between Main Street West and Bold Street, as well as Jackson Street West between Caroline Street and Queen Street South.
Over a dozen officers, including canine and emergency response unit officers, were searching the neighbourhood for evidence related to the investigation.
No suspects are currently in custody. Police are actively working to establish a suspect description, which McKenna stated will be released to the public as soon as it is available. Police are requesting area residents to contact them if they see anything suspicious on their dashcams or home security cameras.

CityHousing Hamilton CEO Adam Sweedland was on-site assisting residents who were temporarily displaced from their apartments while police conducted the investigation.
He expressed his shock: “I have no words at this point in time. I mean, I think we’ve seen that the gun violence in the city is becoming a grave concern. And to know that it’s happening right in our building is very, very concerning to us.”
Displaced residents were provided space inside an attached CityHousing-owned plaza as they waited to return to their apartments.
Sweedland said there will be support in place for residents following the incident.
An update from police is expected to occur early in the morning.
