The City of Hamilton has declared the Cannon Knitting Mill building on the corner of Cannon Street East and Mary Street North to be unsafe due to deteriorating and unsecured window panes. As a result, fencing now surrounds the building.

The building is owned by Harry Stinson.

Stinson purchased the building from the City of Hamilton’s joint venture Hamilton Realty Capital Corporation in 2016 for $3 million. The City purchased the building in 2011. During the five years that the City owned the building, the City allowed it to deteriorate.

Stinson has pitched building a 20-storey tower with 366 units as an adaptive reuse of the site.

The building is a heritage designated structure.

No details have yet been released by the City regarding timelines for compliance.
