Liberal Leader Mark Carney attended Good Friday Mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Hamilton, becoming the second Prime Minister to attend Good Friday at my parish.
On Friday, Carney was campaigning in the Niagara region. He attended Mass on his way back to Hamilton Airport, where his campaign plane was parked.
St. Patrick’s outreach programs are nationally regarded, especially the De Mazenod Door, which provides daily breakfast and lunch to hundreds of people.
In 2019, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended Good Friday Mass and served lunch to highlight the parish’s good works.
The Prime Minister’s Office staff chose to return to St. Patrick’s.
They deliberately kept his attendance low-key. There was no fanfare.
Carney arrived at Mass, took a seat (in a block of pews reserved for security reasons), and at the end of Mass, he was invited to venerate the Cross before gracefully leaving the church.
This was not a campaign stop. There was no underlying statement about the competitiveness of Hamilton Centre.
Where the Prime Minister goes and what the Prime Minister does is news, but sometimes, the story has no underlying meaning—it is just what we see.
