Thursday, June 4, 2026, is a big day for AI in Canada, and in Hamilton.
The national AI strategy will be unveiled, both the federal and provincial ministers responsible for AI will speak at a Hamilton area event, and a decision will be made at City Hall regarding Steelport’s plan for data centres on the former Stelco lands.
Committee of Adjustment Vote on Steelport Lands – 9:35 a.m.
At Hamilton City Hall, the Committee of Adjustment will vote on a land severance application submitted by Slate Asset Management to carve out a 76-hectare (188-acre) section of the former Stelco lands on harbour industrial property. The severance would permit a joint-venture application to construct federally funded data centres.
The application has resulted in the largest-ever submission of public letters to the City of Hamilton on a single agenda item. The Committee of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body staffed by citizen appointees that resolves conflicts involving zoning bylaw requirements and administers land divisions and long-term leases. The Slate severance application is, in legal and planning terms, a routine land severances and recommended for approval..
Federal and Provincial AI Ministers Address Hamilton Business Leaders – Mid-morning
Around the same time, federal Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon will address Hamilton business leaders and city council members at the Bay Area Economic Summit, organized by the Hamilton and Burlington Chambers of Commerce and funded by both municipalities.
Stephen Crawford, Ontario’s Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, who oversees Ontario’s Artificial Intelligence strategy, will also speak at the event. The planned Steelport data centre campus is expected to be part of the discussion.
Prime Minister Unveils Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy – 10:45 a.m.
At 10:45 a.m., in Toronto, Prime Minister Mark Carney will unveil Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. The plan will be released to journalists under embargo during a technical briefing prior to the public announcement.
