Slate is moving to fast-track the first phase of its Steelport redevelopment of the former Stelco lands on Hamilton’s industrial harbourlands. Slate is requesting a land severance to carve a 76-hectare (188-acre) parcel out of the larger 286-hectare (706-acre) industrial site to facilitate a “hyperscale and enterprise data centre campus.”

Slate’s planning submission states the severance is intended to “capitalize on immediate demand” and “streamline and provide a faster path for development” for the eastern portion of the lands. Slate is seeking to secure federally funded academic AI supercomputer data centres to be built on the site. The former Stelco lands are already serviced to meet the electrical needs of a data centre, and Hamilton Harbour can provide the water required for cooling needs.

As part of its application, Slate has committed to upgrades to its site to address stormwater and will achieve “Level 1 Enhanced Treatment” standards, resulting in 80 per cent suspended solids removal via oil/grit separators and green infrastructure like bioswales.

The Committee of Adjustment will consider the application on May 19, 2026, with the hearing scheduled to begin at 10:10 a.m.
