Hamilton’s Property Standards Committee failed to achieve quorum during its scheduled April meeting, the City revealed last week. This is the four meeting cancellation for the committee due to insufficient attendance.
Each cancellation prevents Hamilton from enforcing property standards orders, often leaving tenants in limbo, leaving unaddressed structural concerns on major streets, and risking structural failures of heritage buildings. The delays could also expose the City to legal risk if harm results from its failure to enforce orders.
The quasi-judicial committee consists of five citizen volunteers and requires three members present to achieve quorum. One member has now missed four consecutive meetings, which should trigger removal under Section 28 of Hamilton’s citizen appointee policy.
Section 28 states a member will be asked to resign or recommended for removal after missing three consecutive meetings.
However, City Clerk Matthew Trennum said removing the absent member will not solve the underlying problem.
“The Selection Committee does not conduct recruitment to fill vacancies within 12 months of the end of a Term of Council, and a resignation or removal at this stage would reduce quorum requirements to three of four members. It would not address the Committee’s ability to meet quorum requirements.”
Recruitment for new members will not begin until early 2027, following October’s municipal election.

Sounds like they have a hot mess and the process is being held ransom my stupid rules. Time to change the rules
Totally unacceptable. These members of Council and the volunteers need to be held accountable and the absentees names should be published. The “STANDARDS” of numerous properties in the city are on a par with Niagara Falls, NY.
The civic representatives are paid dearly with our tax dollars and the they are A.W.O.L. ?
October can’t come soon enough.
That is just dumb. There should be a clause in there.If a member fails to be present after 3 consecutive times they are removed and the vacant spot is filled immediately not in months or a year.
