A black Dodge Ram pickup truck sat at the edge of the parking lot at 77 Governors Road and the Chegwin Park Path, metres north of Governors Road, its driver’s door open and hazard lights flashing, visible from the path.

Fresh black tire markings crossed the sidewalk entering the parking lot.

Dozens of police officers responded with tactical weapons while people were told to remain inside nearby senior apartment buildings as homicide detectives and forensic teams collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

This was the scene across from St. Joseph’s Villa, one of the best known and most sought-after senior apartment buildings in Hamilton, at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

In a short statement, Hamilton Police confirmed they were investigating the shooting as a homicide. No other information was provided.

Dozens of people were stuck waiting at the nearby main intersection of Governors Road and Ogilvie Street.

Witnesses living across the street at 50 Governors Road described seeing two vehicles, one chasing the other, and then hearing gunshots.

The tire marks would be consistent with this description of events. Created by a vehicle moving at high speed across newer asphalt during a heat wave.

Hamilton’s paramedic service confirmed that a man in his 30s was the deceased.

On Monday, Hamilton Police stated the deceased was a 25-year-old male.

More information is expected to be released later Monday morning.

Clarification, July 28, 2025 09:39: The original version stated in front of St. Joseph's Villa. It is more accurate to state across [the road] from St. Joseph's Villa. Thank you to those who commented for noting the story could be clearer.

  1. The parking lot where it happened is actually used as visitor parking for 101 Governor’s Green. Some of the tenants also use it. No relation to the condo building at 77.

  2. you make it sound like st. joseph’s villa is 77 governors. it’s down the street a bit and people there likely heard the shooting but wouldn’t be in view of it. irrelevant and probably not appreciated by st. joe’s either

  3. Thus building is not St. Joseph Villa, this is an upscale condo building , not a senior building.
