Hamilton’s Director of Transit Maureen Cosyn Heath has been recruited by the City of Mississauga as its new Director of Transit.
Mississauga’s MiWay is Ontario’s third-largest municipal transit system.
The City of Hamilton hired Cosyn Heath in June 2021.
During her tenure, the HSR recovered from pandemic ridership declines at a similar pace to other municipalities. Pre-pandemic work to prepare for LRT construction and redesign the HSR route network continued.
The first HSR strike in over 25 years was easily the biggest event of her tenure.
Negotiations are primarily driven by the City Manager’s Office, with the Transit Director serving in an advisory role.
The CMO sought to remove some minor benefits, including a driver shuttle bus, from HSR employees. At the same time, HSR workers sought higher wage increases than the City’s largest union, CUPE 5167, had agreed to.
After a week, the strike was settled in a face-saving compromise that kept the driver shuttle, granted a signing bonus, and provided one-time health spending benefits.
Cosyn Heath could still present the new HSR routes implementation plan before her tenure is complete at the end of May.
