Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says the subject and witness officers in the police-involve shooting on Sunday afternoon were not equipped with body-worn cameras.
In a statement Sunday night, responding to a question from TPR, the SIU stated, “The officers involved in this case did not have body-worn cameras.“
According to information provided by Hamilton Police and the SIU, shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Hamilton Police responded to a multiple-unit building at 227 Hunter Street East for an assault call.
Upon arrival, Hamilton Police stated they “located a male victim suffering from a stabbing.” “Moments later, officers had an interaction with a suspect and the SIU has invoked their mandate.”
The SIU statement states when police arrived, they “located a man with an edged weapon.” The man was shot by at least one police officer and sustained serious injuries.
Hamilton Police state the victim of the stabbing “succumbed to their injuries.”
Hamilton Police began deploying body-worn cameras on March 3.
TPR emailed police asking about the camera deployment timeline. Hamilton Police did not respond before publication.
Hamilton Police have scheduled a press conference for 1:00 p.m.
