Mayor Andrea Horwath says today’s no-notice urgent Council meeting is to “make sure that we’re keeping councillors up to speed” on settlement talks to reach a “resolution” with CN railway regarding the Jamesville redevelopment proposal.

Mayor Horwath’s comments came during a lunch recess at City Hall today.

Responding to the question, “what happened between 2:00 p.m. yesterday and 9:00 p.m. to cause the need” for a no-notice urgent meeting to be called, Mayor Horwath stated:

“I think it’s more of making sure that we’re keeping councillors up to speed.

I think it’s a positive thing that we’re getting into a place where we’re having these conversations that are trying to get us to a resolution that avoids a hearing.

For me, the most important thing is the councillors are aware of what some of those conversations look like and what some of the impacts might be.”

Asked if this statement means she is “leaning towards the more positive indication” that a settlement will be reached.

Mayor Horwath quickly responded:

“I’m very, very hopeful.

We would much rather find a settlement that meets everybody’s needs and that’s what I’m hoping for.

I am certainly hoping for a negotiated settlement that meets the needs of the city, that helps us build the housing, the affordable housing, and the other housing, and that gives us an opportunity to finally move forward on that space.”

The Council no-notice meeting will be held this afternoon.
