Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, in an email at 5:49 p.m. on Monday, states “SIU investigators collected a replica firearm from the scene.”
“The firearms from the two subject officials were also collected.”
On Saturday, Hamilton Police responded to 1964 Main Street West shortly before 5 p.m.
The SIU states that police were responding to a report of “a male acting in a threatening manner.”
“Hamilton Police Service officers made their way to the 5th floor of the building. At some point, they became involved in an interaction with a man.”
43-year-old Erixon Kabera was shot. He died in hospital.
Today’s SIU update comes as community organizations express concern about the SIU’s inaccurate initial statement on Saturday that there was an exchange of gunfire between Kabera and the two officers.
On Sunday, SIU issued an update stating,”Based on information that has come to light in the course of the investigation, it does not appear that the man discharged a firearm.”
Kabera’s family issued a statement Monday morning.
The SIU investigation is ongoing.
