Federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Sean Fraser visited Hamilton on Tuesday, July 23, to announce the details of $44,731,924 in federal Affordable Housing Fund allocations to Hamilton projects.
Most of the funds will go to the state of good repair to keep and bring existing affordable and subsidized units habitable – governments have been criticized for preferring to fund ribbon-cuttings while allowing the loss of affordable housing due to a shortfall in maintenance funding.
17 New Subsidized Housing Units
$1.7-million is being allocated to the Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing project at 16 Steven Avenue. The Pearl project is complete, with 17 units of housing.
55 New Construction CityHousing Units
The City of Hamilton is receiving $5,025,000 for its new 106 Bay Street North apartments, which will contain 55 units. Some of these apartment units replace former family townhouse units in the Jamesville complex at 405 James Street North.
Repairs to 2650 Housing Units
Victoria Park Community Homes is receiving $20-million to fund repairs of 2000 housing units.
Hamilton East Kiwanis Homes is receiving $6.5-million to repair up to 650 units.
85 Shelter Beds
Carol-Ann Place, the YWCA Hamilton’s downtown women’s shelter, will receive $795,829, to fund 25 beds.
A new “60 bed shelter” is receiving $8,417,377. No details were provided about this project.

This is a good step in addressing our housing crisis and homeless situation out on the streets of Hamilton. We are already starting to see new apartment buildings (not just condos) being built.
