Some of the things I’ve read during the weekend – it’s been a quiet weekend.

Wacky Pickering Councillor Loses in Court for a Third Time: I’m awaiting the full decision to be posted to CanLII.
Strong Editorial in Peterborough, where the local Chief of Police has jumped into the political fray with a letter falsely accusing a city councillor of antipolice bias. The newspaper editorial, headlined ‘police and politics don’t mix,’ explains why the Chief’s actions are inappropriate, violate political norms, and calls for Chief Stu Betts to apologize.
Northern Ontario mayor suddenly resigns, alongside a councillor: Callander (pop. 3964) is talking about the sudden unexpected no-notice resignation of their mayor. There is an Integrity Commissioner investigation underway, and the remaining council members are not saying much on ‘legal advice.’
Single Exit Stairway Buildings: The Globe and Mail has a story about a unique new building in Toronto, one that is more livable than usual because it has only one staircase. Ontario’s Building Code requires two. The story details why single egress (common in the rest of the world) can lower housing costs and improve apartment design.
Kelowna gives Freedom of the City honourees lifetime transit and parking passes: I naturally have a wide range of Google Alerts for municipal government keywords. This is how Kelowna Council Policy No. 299 Freedom of the City came to my attention. Last awarded in 2015, the benefits bestowed upon recipients includes a lifetime transit pass, lifetime free parking on streets and municipal parking lots, as well as free short-term parking at the airport.
Belleville Mayor plans to keep using municipal funds to recruit family physicians: Postmedia reports the mayor has stating he plans to continue recruitment incentives despite Ontario’s Minister of Health criticizing municipalites that are doing so.
