Data released by the Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) on Monday confirms the collapse of Hamilton’s private housing market. there were only 76 new ground-oriented and 102 new condo housing units sold in Hamilton between January 1, 2025 and September 30, 2025.

Between January 1 and September 30, 2025, only 76 ground-oriented and 102 condo housing units sold in the city for a combined total of 178 units.

Housing starts have collapsed in tandem. Only 331 ground-oriented housing units began construction during this period, compared to a 2021–24 average of 834 units. New rental unit construction fell to 284 units, down from an average of 342 units.

The sole bright spot came from condo construction. New condo unit construction reached 917 units, up from a 592-unit average, driven by final building permits issued for the 612-unit Television City project.

RESCON estimates the decrease in new unit starts will result in 1512 lost construction jobs in Hamilton.
