During Wednesday’s Hamilton Library Board meeting, Chief Librarian Paul Takala stated he has been meeting with members of council individually to answer their questions regarding the Library’s 2026 budget, strategic vision, and other matters.

The Library is requesting a 5.25 per cent tax levy budget increase, which exceeds the 4.25 per cent “Hold the Line” directive issued by Mayor Andrea Horwath. The Library’s overall budget proposal is $39.4-million. To meet the mayor’s directive, the Library Board would need to cut $374,814 from that proposal.

Takala stated the meetings have been positive, noting the Library will present council a 4.25 per cent alternative when it presents its budget in January, outlining the impact of removing that 1.0 per cent.

“I think there are going to be tough questions asked,” Takala said. “We need to respect the fact that our city council has a lot of pressures.”
