I, Joey Coleman, moderate comments on this website. My general practice is to permit wide latitude for people to post comments with some relevance to the story they are commenting on.

I do not permit defamatory comments, rumours, or accusations. You are free to take those comments and post them elsewhere.

The Ward 8 by-election requires me to declare how I will deal with campaigning in the comments.

I will not be approving candidate comments, and will weigh against approving campaigning comments.

Some examples of what would be campaign comments: “I am voting for or against a candidate.” “If we elect, or don’t elect, [insert outcome or claim]”

The following would generally not be considered campaign comments: “I hope the next councillor does X, Y, Z.” “I hope people vote on issue X, Y, Z.”

1494 Upper Wellington Story Comments

In recent days, a few candidates have posted comments regarding 1494 Upper Wellington Street on a story I published in early June reporting on the Ontario Land Tribunal Case Management Conference.

Residents in the surrounding community are opposed to the proposed two 20-storey buildings which would contain 685 rental units.

They’ve effectively mobilised to make this an election issue, including issuing questionnaires for candidates to respond to.

I have not published these campaign comments. They do not add insight to the early June story regarding the OLT procedural hearing and decision.

I may choose to do a follow-up regarding 1494 Upper Wellington as a campaign story.

If I do, I will ensure candidates who’ve participated in The 155 Podcast have an opportunity to elaborate on the matter.
