A City of Hamilton staff report states that a geometric review of the Red Hill Valley Parkway’s design, examining roadway banking (superelevation) has determined the roadway will need to be rebuilt between Greenhill Avenue to King Street.
Justice Herman J. Wilton-Siegel, the Red Hill Valley Inquiry Commissioner, directed the City to investigate to determine if this section of the RHVP was constructed with a superelevation of at least six percent (6%).
The City report states consulting firm AECOM “confirms that, based on the available data, it appears that in some areas of both northbound and southbound lanes between King Street and Greenhill Avenue, the superelevation is below 6% and recommends that the City address this section to bring the superelevation to within the 2017 Transportation
Association of Canada (TAC) Geometric Design Guide guidelines.”
“AECOM confirmed there is no immediate or imminent safety risk to drivers, staff, or the public,” City staff write.
The City did not release the AECOM report.
“While the curve radius meets the 1992 Ministry of Transportation design guideline, which were applicable at the time of design and construction, it does not conform to the updated 2017 Transportation Association of Canada design guideline,” the City staff report reads.
The City states its report was prepared by Greg Wuisman, Senior Project Manager
Engineering Services, and Dipankar Sharma, Manager of Engineering Services.
Four to Five Million Estimate for Design and Rehab Section of Road
During a closed session meeting last week, City Council approved spending up to $432,074.98 to have AECOM ‘immediately commence’ design work to enable the City to redesign this section of roadway.
City staff estimate that the roadwork will cost between $4-million and $5-million, and it will be included in the 2026 City capital budget.
The City of Hamilton also issued a written statement about the consultant report.
