Heavy five-axle or more truck traffic on Wellington Street North has decreased 86 percent in one year following the City of Hamilton banning heavy trucks from using streets in Hamilton’s Downtown.
Before the change, heavy trucks leaving Hamilton’s industrial areas along Burlington Street routinely used Wellington Street, Cannon Street, Queen Street, and King Street to connect to the provincial highway system via Highway 403.
Those trucks now drive east along Burlington Street and connect to the provincial highway system via the QEW or Red Hill Valley Parkway.
Heavy truck traffic along the RHVP is up 87.5 percent, with the Lincoln Alexander Parkway recording a 68.6 percent increase.
There has also been a significant decrease in trucks using Victoria Avenue of 47.8 percent.
This indicates fewer trucks are exiting Highway 403 en route to the Burlington Street industrial areas.
City Council’s Truck Route Sub-Committee meets on December 12 to discuss the statistics.
Note: the December 12 meeting was cancelled and rescheduled for January 10
