I regularly cycle along Hamilton’s west harbour trail and through the backs to Pier 8. The blue-green algae outbreak in the stagnant waters between Bayfront Park and the waterfront trail is terrible.

Last week, City Council voted to have staff report on what measures can be taken to prevent similar algae outbreaks in the future. [There is nothing that can be done about this year’s outbreak]

It’s not just nature bodies experiencing record algae outbreaks – the sunshine and heat is causing algae blooms in decorative fountains, including at Hamilton City Hall.

Last week, the fountains were drained and cleaned, after extra chlorine was not enough to prevent the build-up of algae.

The fountains are being refilled, with higher levels of chemical treatment to prevent another bloom.
