Following a call from community groups to denounce a planned July 31 visit to Hamilton by the leader of the white nationalist Diagolon movement, members of Hamilton City Council have begun denouncing the scheduled event.

However, the statements do not directly state what they are denouncing.

Ward 8 Clr John-Paul Danko was first to issue a statement, “Far-right, white national, antisemitic, neo-fascists are a direct threat to local democracy and basic human decency.”

Mayor Andrea Horwath issued her statement shortly after.

“I am appalled by the news of the planned visit to our city by a group that promotes hate,” reads the Mayor’s statement. “I strongly condemn the presence of such a group in our community.”

At City Council on Friday, Mayor Horwath used her opening remarks to denounce the planned gathering. Diagolon was not directly named.

Postmedia has a information-dense story about the Diagolon tour that provides background on the group.
