Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is on scene investigating after a Hamilton Police officer shot a person on James Street South between 11:45 and 11:55 p.m. Friday night.
The SIU is only confirming they invoked their mandate, and no confirmation has been provided on the condition of the person shot.
Above how the scene looked between 12:40 a.m. and 1:00am Saturday morning only an hour after the event.
A couple of things of note in the map:

  1. There are two police cruisers within the scene secured for the Special Investigation Unit.
    1. One cruiser is located directly across from Radius restaurant just south of Bold Street in the soundbound right lane. It is directly in front of a HSR articulated bus. HSR normally only operates articulated buses on the 35-College and 27-Upper James routes. A 27 bus was scheduled to be in this location for 11:48pm
    2. The second cruiser is just south of Hunter, still partially in the intersection, in the right southbound lane.
  2. A police jacket is lying on the road with what appears to be a metal water bottle on top of it. The jacket is on the road, northbound lanes, directly in front of the entrance of Radius restaurant. The jacket was being watched by a uniformed officer, indicating its position may be important to the SIU investigation.
    1. The distance from the cruiser to the jacket is approximately 3 to 5 metres.
  3. Medical debris, paramedics treated the person who was shot at the spot where what appears to only be medical debris was located. This is approximately 70 metres from where the jacket was located, and is downhill from both the jacket and cruiser.

As of 4:40am Saturday, the SIU had not yet issued their initial press statement. They will announce the release on Twitter: @SIUOntario
