Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs announced on Twitter today that upcoming amendments to Ontario’s Municipal Act will allow for municipal bodies to continue meeting by video in the post-COVID future.
Last Friday, during the City Council meeting, Mayor Fred Eisenberger expressed support for the pending proposal. Ward 4 Councillor Sam Merulla, who said he was video conferencing from Algonquin, said he hopes the change is made permanent to enable him to attend meetings remotely in the future.
For the coming year, under extended COVID legislation, the emergency regulations allowing municipal video meetings will remain in effect.
Amendments to the Municipal Act will likely be presented to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario this fall.
