Good afternoon, Hamilton City Council will resume meeting at 1:30 p.m. as they continue yesterday’s agenda.
There are nine agendas items remaining on the public portion of the agenda, and four closed session agenda items remaining. The meeting resumes at Item 8.2 – Sport Tourism Hosting.
The items remaining include:
- Allocating public funds to bid on the purchasing hosting rights for the the 2031/2032 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, and to sign agreements for a still-confidential major national sport tourism convention;
- Approval of the 2026 Vacant Unit Tax bylaw (an issue that Council splits 9-7 on);
- Changes to Hamilton’s election sign regulations to comply with recent court decisions issued in other Ontario municipalities;
- Supporting a new Community Hub at 700 Garner Road East; and
- A notice of motion to renaming the City’s place naming policies.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Deputy Mayor for July, Ward 14 Councillor Mike Spadafora just entered the room and playfully looked up at me and say “I’m here, I’m here.”
7 Council members are already seated.
There are now eight council members in the Chamber, one via video conference. This means they will have quorum to start.
Chair Spadafora gets things moving quickly.
Item 8.2 PED26151 Sport Tourism Hosting Opportunities is quickly APPROVED. This means the City will bid on purchasing the World Junior Hockey tournament.
Item 8.3 is staff asking City Council if the City of Hamilton wants to comment on the ERO comment period regarding the adoption of a Water and Wastewater Public Corporation Model.
This primarily relates to previous plans to dissolve Peel Region.
Where this potential works is when multiple municipalities share a water and wastewater system.
Hamilton’s system is already benefiting from this, the City’s Director of Water notes.
