The now-former Vice-Chair of the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB), Joanne Belanger, is running to serve as a Catholic school trustee in Hamilton after relocating from Eastern Ontario.
Belanger registered as a candidate on May 7, seeking to represent Ward 6 on the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board. In doing so, she declared Hamilton as her primary residence.
Upon registering, Belanger automatically vacated her ALCDSB seat. The Education Act requires trustees to maintain their primary residence within the jurisdiction of the district school board they serve.
“Please be advised that I moved to Hamilton last week and have resigned my position as a trustee on the ALCDSB,” Belanger told this publication when contacted to confirm her residency and status as an ALCDSB trustee.
Belanger was elected to the ALCDSB in 2022, representing the Quinte West region. The expansive Eastern Ontario school board spans from Lake Ontario in the south to Algonquin provincial park in the north, and includes Napanee, Kingston, Belleville and Quinte West.
Belanger previously served as a trustee on the former Hastings and Prince Edward Roman Catholic Separate School Board from 1994 to 1997. She was also an NDP candidate in the 2018 provincial election.
Real estate records state Belanger purchased her Ward 6 Hamilton residence in November 2023, and closed the transaction in January 2024.
Her departure from the ALCDSB has not yet been posted on the school board’s website.
