John-Paul Danko stood up in the House of Commons today and said he is already looking forward to future federal investments to build the proposed A-Line of Hamilton’s rapid transit network.
In a speech praising his Liberal government’s budget as one “that believes in Hamilton’s future,” the Member of Parliament for Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas stated the federal government remains committed to providing $1.7-billion for the B-Line LRT.
“Our government has also reaffirmed support for the Hamilton B-Line LRT, the first phase of the rapid transit network, which will transform the entire city,” Danko stated.
“As I did when I served on Hamilton City Council, I’m already looking forward to future investment in the next phase of light rail transit along the Upper James Corridor, right from the John C. Munro International Airport to the port and the waterfront.”
Danko is a backbencher. Statements from backbenchers do not represent government policy. There are no plans to construct the A-Line, it only exists as a concept.
Uncertainty remains for the B-Line LRT project, which was at one point envisioned to begin construction in 2019. The provincial and federal governments have not reached a final funding agreement to begin construction. In May 2021, each level committed $1.7-billion to the project, for a total $3.4-billion budget. At the time, it was promised that construction would begin in 2024.
Thus far, $201-million has been spent on the project. The civil and utilities works portion is in active procurement, but no contracts have been awarded.
There is still no timeline for construction start, duration, opening date or issuance of the Civil and Utilities Work package.
