Hamilton’s four percent municipal accommodation tax is projected to generate $1,110,013 in 2025. However, spending out of the fund is expected to be $1,470,843, meaning $360,830 will be drawn from reserve funds built up in previous years.
Hotel stays are presently the only source of revenue.
The City plans to spend $1.36-million on purchasing national events/conventions and supporting existing local event strategies. The remaining $100,000 budget cost is City charges, consultants, and other administrative expenses.
The City hopes to purchase, via bid fees, events such as the Canadian Society of Association Executives, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conferences, the Little Native Hockey League (Little NHL), “various confidential sport and music events at Tim Hortons Field,” and the International Children’s Games.
$500,000 is allocated for these purchases.
$300,000 will be allocated for marketing and promoting Hamilton as an event destination.
$200,000 is being spent on a “Downtown Hamilton Nighttime Economy Study” to see how the City can create an after-hours economy.
$200,000 will be spent to “develop and launch new visitor experiences,” including a “donut trail” highlighting Hamilton’s independent donut-making businesses, waterfall tours, and Indigenous tourism initiatives.
The meeting begins at 2:00 p.m. Here are the links for the meeting agenda, and the YouTube live stream.
