Hamilton City Manager Marnie Cluckie says changes to the City’s organizational structure are forthcoming.

“In terms of the organizational chart, there will be a change coming,” Cluckie said during her post-Council meeting availability on April 30. “That is becoming my focus now that I have shifted from the cyber security incident into rebuilding back better and stronger.”

She took her first year as City Manager as an “opportunity to listen and learn.”

“Now I need to make some changes that help us achieve our strategic priorities and deliver the outcomes that the community expects of us.”

Only nine days earlier, Cluckie dismissed two general managers. This week, the job posting to replace the GM of Public Works was posted.

“I will work very diligently to hire very quickly,” Cluckie said. “I’d like to see the person in place. Within three to six months or closer to the three-month mark.”

“I give that range because it’s important to get the right person.”

The hiring of the GM of Planning and Economic Development will be complete soon. [The previous GM left voluntarily nearly 14 months ago.]

The second GM of Community Services position will remain vacant, and the other GM of Community Services will take full responsibility for the department.

“I will not be replacing the other GM position at this time. I will be waiting for the organizational structure review to be completed,” Cluckie said.

City Council will be briefed on the organization restructuring plan during the closed session portion of the upcoming May 7 Council ratification meeting.

(Council was to be briefed on May 1, but deferred the matter due to that day’s council meeting running longer than scheduled.)

  1. Why does it take a year to figure out competency of your organization? I have not looked at the sunshine list, but I bet her salary range is in the $150k + range. In the private sector you do not have a year to sort out what you were hired to do. She is not even counting the HSR Director that just resigned, so now 4 to replace. Maybe she is the problem as there seems to a pattern forming. As pointed out our taxes are outrageous for what we get. Staff bloat, over paid Mayor, $5 million loss on sole sourced homeless homes, rammed through by the Mayor using strong Mayor powers, poor procurement processes to name just a few.
Having worked for the city I understand how ineffective and inefficient the city is.
Wait until the “nightmare on King St” comes along (LRT) and you are going to see mismanagement at it’s finest.

  2. Maybe while she is reorganizing, she can figure out how to get more done with fewer employees. A good manager would be able to see the bloated number of our cities employees, and pare them down. This city has to work harder, much harder, to control costs and alleviate the tax burden on it’s citizens. Current spending is unsustainable!

  3. Hope someone from within is promoted instead of someone from outside. Especially if she tries to bring in someone from her former job which often happens when people jump from city to city.
