Ward 3 Councillor Nrinder Nann wrote on social media this morning that she’ll move her planned vacant properties action motion at next week’s (May 28) Council Ratification meeting following this morning’s latest fire on Ottawa Street North.

“I had already prepared a motion requesting staff to report back on steps to demo the vacant, derelict buildings and properly restore safety for next Planning Committee but will bring it to Council instead.

Nann planned to present a motion to the Planning Committee in June to address problems with two vacant structures at 43, 45 and 47 Ottawa Street North.

This morning, Hamilton’s fire department responded to the buildings for a structure fire at 43 Ottawa Street North.

There were no injuries. Ottawa Street was closed during fire operations.

  1. Meanwhile King between Steven and Eas t avenue has about eight buildings in the same state of disrepair for the last 3 years. The owner of the lot by Steven has realized the city doesn’t enforce anything, dumped a dozen dump trucks worth of fill on his lot.

  2. Encouraged to see progress.

I began calling publicly for the demolition of these buildings back in October 2024, after years of inaction. Just a few weeks ago, I delegated in Chambers to highlight these very properties—and others—that urgently need to come down.

It’s unfortunate things were allowed to reach this point—fires, squatters, and drug use just steps from a school. That reflects policy failure, and frankly, a lack of leadership from Councillor Nann. Our neighbourhood deserves better.
