The City of Hamilton is moving quickly to rename the mezzanine in the Glanbrook Arena as the ‘Vern Gaddye Mezzanine’ in honour of long-time volunteer and Committee of Adjustment Member Laverne Gaddye.

Ward 11 Councillor Mark Tadeson stated

Gaddye has been recognized for his community service, including being awarded Glanbrook Citizen of the Year in 2014, the Isabel Cole Memorial Award by the
Glanbrook Rangers in 2017, and the Ontario Hockey Association’s Crystal Puck Award in 2018. He’s been a volunteer with the Glanbrook Jr C’s since 2000.

“Recently, a few weeks ago, Vernon took a turn for what is the very worst,” Ward 11 Councillor Mark Tadeson said on Thursday. “His health went bad pretty quickly.”

Gaddye “is currently in palliative care following a battle with cancer.”

“As a community, we’re still in a bit of disbelief.”

“The community is rallying, trying to let Vern know how much we appreciate him while we still can,” Tadeson said as he held back his emotions. “Time is of the essence here as Vern’s health is deteriorating.”

The renaming was approved unanimously at the Facility Naming Sub-Committee and is scheduled for ratification at the May 28, 2025, Council meeting.

“It’s just something that we’re trying to get done so that he knows that we care,” Tadeson said.
