Hamilton City Hall will conduct its first-ever “lockdown drills” this week as the City seeks to be better prepared for an emergency situation similar to the 2024 gunman attack at Edmonton’s City Hall.

A “service disruption” notice posted by the City states:

As a part of the City of Hamilton’s continued emergency response training, there will be two scheduled lockdown-type drills held at City Hall.

The scheduled drills will take place on:

  • Wednesday, April 2, 2025 – 2 pm
  • Thursday, April 3, 2025 – 10 am

Each drill should last approximately 30 minutes from start to completion.

During this time, the doors to City Hall will be locked and security will be posted outside to inform members of the public what is happening. The impact to the public and individuals at City Hall should be minimal.

Edmonton City Hall was attacked by a gunman who opened fire and threw a Molotov cocktail inside the facility on January 23, 2024.

Nobody was injured. The gunman is charged with numerous offenses, including terrorism charges.

Hamilton Began Planning in Response to Edmonton Attack

Five days following the Edmonton attack, staff from each of the seven floors of Hamilton City Hall met with the City’s security consultants and facility managers to discuss procedures for instituting a lockdown.

During the past year, confidential security changes have been implemented at Hamilton City Hall.
