Sarnia to revisit ‘renoviction’ bylaw, as right-of-centre councillor seeks to protect vulnerable citizens: This term’s Hamilton City Council moved swiftly in 2023 to implement a municipal renovictions bylaw. Other municipalities have followed Hamilton’s lead. Sarnia may join the list. There was an unanimous vote on Monday to move in this direction. The mover of the motion was Sarnia’s most right-of-centre councillor.

Calgary implemented city-wide upzoning, and record new housing starts resulted: In 2024, in a decision that was highly contested during the longest-ever meeting, Calgary’s city council implemented a city-wide upzoning and significantly streamlined its development approval and building permit processes.

The result, even more new housing approvals and occupancies. Calgary enjoyed a record year (nearly double the 10-year average) for new occupancies, and a record number of new unit approvals.

Calgary’s mayor was defeated in the 2025 election, the new mayor ran on a platform of reinstating restrictive zoning, and Calgary council is considering a reversal of the city-wide upzoning in March.

Calgary funds more office to affordable housing projects: Calgary continues to get affordable housing built. They announced grants totally ~$10.3-million to create 128 units of affordable housing in Downtown Calgary in two office to residential conversion projects.

Kelowna City Council votes in favour of distracted decision making:

Kelowna Council voted against a procedural change that would’ve required them to focus on council meetings by keeping their smartphones away during meetings.

North Frontenac councillor removed from office after skipping meetings for months: North Frontenac township invoked Section 259(1)(c) of the Ontario Municipal Act. A councillor who failed to show up to meetings in Nov, Dec, and Jan has been removed from office and their council seat declared vacant, in accordance with this rule that missing “three successive months” meetings results in automatic removal.

I wrote about the “three successive months” issue in 2021, noting there are at least three different interpretations of what this means: (1) since the last attended council meeting; (2) since the first missed council meeting; or (3) three full calendar months.

Big oops … Oak View Group forgot to renew the liquor licence at Oshawa’s arena, leaving OHL fans dry this past weekend. The City of Oshawa says OVG is responsible for the error.
