Philip Bradshaw is the first of the 26 Ward 8 by-election candidates to submit his campaign financial return. He attended City Hall earlier today, Oct. 1, to file.
He spent $1,236.76 of his own money on the campaign.
The final spending limits were set at $25,465.45 for general spending and $2,546.55 for “parties and other expressions of appreciation.” Candidates are permitted to self-finance up to $9,815.40.
Candidates have until Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. to file their financial returns or to request an extension.
I will wait until at least three of the top five candidates, by vote total, have filed their returns before filing my next report, barring something unexpected.
The returns of the top candidates will provide insight into the costs of running a winning campaign and who donated to those campaigns.
Also, I’m going to ask the City Clerk for his interpretation of who can file requests for compliance audits.
In December 2024, an Ontario Superior Court justice ruled that only electors who live within a ward can file compliance requests. Prior to this ruling, the Municipal Elections Act was understood to permit any qualified elector within the whole of the municipality to file a request for any race.
