The City of Hamilton says 65 parking violators participated in the City’s first-ever ‘Toys for Tickets’ drive last year, donating a total retail value of $4,841.19 in toys in exchange for the City waiving $4,187 in parking ticket fines.
The toys were donated to the United Way Halton and Hamilton for distribution. The event also contributed to improving the Hamilton Municipal Parking System’s public image and workplace morale, according to the staff report.
On Tuesday, Council’s Planning Committee voted 12-0 to make the program an annual event.
Ward 2 Councillor Cameron Kroetsch, who brought forth the 2024 motion to pilot the toy drive, credited Hasnain Khan from his office for the idea.
The dates for the 2025 week-long ‘Toys for Tickets’ drive will be announced following formal Council ratification of the decision on October 29.
