Residents of Upper Stoney Creek have been fed up with odours from the GFL Landfill for years.

In recent years, the facility on Green Mountain Road has released excess emissions of total reduced sulphur compounds, allowed leachate to exceed legal limits, and allowed waste to be dumped higher than the legal limit.

Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks recently fined GFL $15,000 for three incidents that occurred in 2023.

Recent Complaints

In an update posted on Thursday (September 4), GFL states it has recieved “seven odour complaints from August 28th to September 4th, 2025” and are taking measures in response.

Public Comments Open on ERO for Construction of a New Leachate Treatment System

Also on Thursday, the Ministry opened public comments regarding GFL’s application to ” to amend the existing Environmental Compliance Approval (waste disposal site) No. A181008 for approval of construction of a new Leachate Treatment System (LTS) to replace the existing treatment system.”

Comments are open until October 19.
