Instagram now requires accounts to have a minimum of 1000 followers to use its livestreaming option.

I wonder what impact this change will have on Hamilton’s political scene?

Instagram’s live feature has proven popular with upstart candidates and fringe political groups.

Without a follower-count entry barrier, anyone could share themselves and their thoughts to anyone willing to pause scrolling long-enough to watch.

Going into the 2026 municipal election, I’m curious what platforms and methods candidates will adopt in its place.

The Movements

I have a unique vantage point covering Hamilton City Council. I am a member of the public and sit in the public gallery at every meeting. From those opposed to mandatory COVID vaccinations, those seeking to defund the police, protests regarding encampments, and striking municipal workers, I’ve been in the middle of many passionate crowds.

I’ve never had an issue with any of these groups.

Something I’ve noticed is that many attendees opposed to mandatory COVID vaccinations, and related issues, are usually livestreaming their delegations and the meetings using Instagram.

The live chats during these streams are active. It is an important platform for these political groups and communities.

(I haven’t seen the same consistency of live streaming by other political groups in the gallery.)

Political Speech is Like Electricity, The Currents Will Find An Alternate Path

Political movements, from the centre to the extreme fringes, have always found alternative ways when platforms disappear or are restricted.

For upstart politicians, the various ‘neighbourhood groups’ and ‘pages’ on Facebook should provide access to groups of voters.

In local politics, the door-to-door flyer will be the singlemost important piece of campaign literature.

The next time there is a large crowd at City Hall, I’ll be watching to see what apps people are using to livestream.
