Like many of you, I’ve been watching the bankruptcy proceedings for the Hudson’s Bay Company. HBC was Canada’s oldest company, and its closure appears to mark the end of the large retail department store in Canada. (Plus, I was a frequent Bay shopper.)

Yesterday, July 29, more court documents were posted by the bankruptcy receiver.

Tuesday’s document release includes a motion by Liu’s company asking Ontario’s Superior Court to order the reassignment of 25 HBC leases.

Those supporting motion record states billionaire Ruby Liu’s investment corporation is seeking to purchase HBC’s lease at Lime Ridge Mall. Liu plans to launch a new department store chain, named Ruby Liu.

Previous owner Cadillac Fairview is opposing the lease sales, stating Liu lacks the experience to ensure the success of her plan. (CF sold Lime Ridge Mall to Primaris REIT in mid-June.)

Liu is also seeking the Mapleview Centre lease in Burlington.
