Memorial for Belinda Sarkdoie

Date: Friday, July 18
Time: 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Location: King Street and James Street (in front of Jackson Square)

The Ghanaian Association of Hamilton is organizing a vigil in memory of Belinda Sarkodie that will be held this Friday (July 18) at 5:00 p.m. at the intersection of King and James in downtown Hamilton.

In a statement, the Association states the community is deeply shocked and saddened by the senseless death of 26-year-old Sarkodie.

Last Friday, July 11, Sarkodie was killed by a gunman while standing at a bus stop at King and James.

Hamilton Police state Sarkodie was an “innocent victim” who was just going about her day when a gunman opened fire at the busy intersection around 5:25 p.m. Police state the alleged 17-year-old gunman was trying to murder three other people.

Police continue to search for the 17-year-old who is charged with second-degree murder. A Court order permits the publication of his name and photograph until he is arrested.

The Association states they are “working with other Ghanaian organizations to assist the family back in Ghana to navigate through this tragic event here in Canada.”

“Let us all keep Belinda’s family in our thoughts and prayers and give them the privacy they need at this difficult time.”
