In a memo posted to the City of Hamilton website today, Acting Director, Corporate Facilities & Energy Management Chris Herstek states Eastwood Arena “will re-open in September 2025 and will be assessed again for possible closure in the Summer/Fall of 2026, prior to any significant investments/rehabilitation work required.”
The facility was closed in March after “rotting was observed in an isolated section” of the roof deck. Engineering consultants were hired to inspect the structure.
“Moisture probes at four roof locations showed acceptable moisture levels within safe ranges and with no saturation of the wood fibres,” Herstek writes. “The consultant indicated that the facility can safely resume normal operations.”
The aging facility, originally built in 1959 as an ice arena, presently operates an indoor floor facility and is used by the Hammer City Roller Derby, the Hamilton Ball Hockey
Association and the Hamilton Lacrosse Association.
Herstek states the facility needs over $3-million in capital maintenance and rehabilitation work over the next five years to continue operating.
