With the tenth anniversary of the 100 percent capital funding announcement coming up on Monday (May 26), the Ontario government announced today (May 21) that Hamilton’s B-Line Light Rail Transit project has reached the request for proposal phase.
Today’s written announcement did not include possible construction timelines or the bid deadline.
“Four teams have been invited to submit proposals for civil work, including utility relocations, roads, structures, grade separations, bridges, sidewalks, and traffic control signals along the 14-kilometre route,” reads the statement.
The Ontario Liberal government approved 100 percent capital funding in 2015, but the Ontario Conservative government cancelled the project in fall 2019.
In May 2021, the federal Liberal government, championed by Minister of Labour Filomena Tassi and Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catharine McKenna, revived the project by including it in a joint federal-provincial infrastructure funding package to support the Ontario Conservative government’s Toronto transit projects.
The federal government committed “up to $1.7 billion” to cover 50 percent of the Hamilton project’s capital costs, and the Ontario government agreed to allocate $1.7 billion to the project.
Metrolinx is responsible for delivering the project.

Sorry Adam…Not a snowballs chance in he!! that this project will be completed on time and on budget. any group that incudes the City of Hamilton and Metrolinx cannot be relied upon to do anything correctly. The best bet is to cut the losses now and abandon this farce. Monorail, Monorail, MONORAIL!!!!
Every time Metrolinx touches a capital project it goes absolutely haywire and this project already stinks of an absolute white elephant, a Simpsons-esque monorail. I really hope as a Canadian, Ontarian and Hamiltonian tax-payer that Metrolinx is learning fast (really fast) from the Eglington Crosstown and the Hazel McCallion Line and will be able to deliver this LRT in a timeline and budget that we all be pleasantly surprised by.
Adam, a song from Supertramp comes to mind here. DREAMER, nothin’ but a DREAMER!! Alas Hamilton will not be the fortunate ones to see Metrolinx handling of such projects improving!!
