Ontario’s Minister of Education Paul Calandra introduced legislation today that will require the province’s publicly funded school boards to participate in police school resource officer programs.
Bill 33, the Supporting Children and Students Act, will require the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board to permit Hamilton Police school resource officers to engage in crime prevention and other programs.
In June 2020, HWDSB Trustees voted to revoke permission for Hamilton Police to operate its school resource officer program in public schools.
Bill 33 amends the Education Act to require school boards to “implement school resource officer programs, where such programs are available.”
Following today’s Hamilton Police Services Board meeting, Deputy Chief Ryan Diodati stated that the service’s Superintendent, Community Safety Division, will review the legislation and provide comments after doing so.
Note: Public comment submissions on the Regulatory Registry of Ontario are open until June 30.
