The City of Hamilton says it responded to 165 watermain breaks in 2024, down from 188 in 2023, and well below the five-year average of 222 annual breaks.
Nearly all the breaks were caused by ground movements, such as freeze/thaw cycles, with the age of infrastructure a contributing factor.
The City estimates it spent $2.06-million repairing breaks during 2024. A City staff report states the exact amount is unknown due to the City’s February 2024 cybersecurity failure.
There were 267 watermain breaks in 2020, 261 in 2021, and 227 in 2022.
