Hamilton Police state that stray bullet(s) struck an HSR bus at around 1:12 a.m. this morning (May 28) as it was passing through the area of Mud Street West and Upper Centennial Parkway in Stoney Creek.

There were no passengers on board, and the operator was not physically injured.

Police are investigating and request that anyone with dashcam or other footage from the area contact the Shooting Response Team at 905-546-4883 or email shootingresponseteam@hamiltonpolice.ca.

City of Hamilton HSR real-time data records show bus number 2265, operating on Route 43 Stone Church, was at the location of the shooting at the time stated by police.

Acting General Manager of Public Works Jackie Kennedy says the City is supporting the operator following the traumatic event, adding the City is relieved nobody was injured.

Ward 9 Councillor Brad Clark, who represents the area where the shooting occurred, says senior levels of government must act to keep criminals who use guns in jail.

“This gun violence has to stop, and the senior levels of government have to step up to ensure that the courts have the power and the authority to hold some of these people in jail,” he stated shortly after learning about the incident. “There have been far too many incidents where people have been firing guns, get arrested and then they get released within hours, only to be sent back out again.”

Clark says more action is needed before more people are killed.

“It has frustrated me for years that the police across the province use the terminology that it was not a targeted shooting. It has frustrated me for years that the police across the province use the terminology that it was not a targeted shooting.”

Each shooting brings back painful memories for Clark. On April 12, 2015, his son Brandon was shot in the back. Brandon suffered serious injuries and required multiple surgeries.

Asked by CHCH News about how he feels as the father of a shooting victim, Brad responded:

“It’s just irritating me that the province and the feds have not got their act together.”

“How many people have to get shot? How many people have to die?”
